Tasting Note
Dark straw with orange glints. Quince, poire William and a touch of vanilla on the nose, then a structured, complex palate of stone fruit with firm tannins and a long finish. Pure, fresh and balanced.
Drink it with: hard and semi-hard cheeses, turbot, tuna steak or roast chicken.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked, destemmed and lightly crushed, then 3½ weeks on the skins at low temperature: 20% in clay amphorae, 80% in steel. Two months in one-year-old French barriques, then bottled unfiltered with no added sulphur.
The Vineyards
Mountain vineyards in western Romania, mixing old vines with newer plantings.
The Producer
Cramele Recas started out with 650 hectares of neglected vineyards and an old state winery. Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira have built it into Romania's most successful winery, known for great value and a range that runs to natural and orange wines.
