Tasting Note
Bright cherry and blackberry with white pepper, purple flowers, liquorice, a touch of tar and smoked meat. Rich and concentrated, yet smooth, with a long, fresh finish.
Drink it with: lamb shawarma, gyros or spiced beef.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked at night in several passes, given a short cold soak and fermented in open-top and closed tanks. Twenty-four months in used French barrels on fine lees.
The Vineyards
Half from 30-year-old vines on sandy, limestone-rich slopes in Arroyo Grande; half from sandy, gravelly soils in the Santa Ynez Valley, with warmer days and colder nights.
The Producer
Qupé is one of California's original Rhône pioneers, built on cool-climate Syrah and Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. Now in the hands of Andrew Murray, it focuses on carefully chosen sites in the Central Coast's cool east–west valleys and a minimal-intervention approach. Founder Bob Lindquist received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
