Tasting Note
Green apple, lemon rind, pineapple, toasted brioche and a hint of orange marmalade. Bright and lively on the palate, with orange and lemon and a long, fresh finish.
Drink it with: goat's cheese, oysters and shellfish, sushi, vegetable risotto or moules frites.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked at night in small batches, whole-cluster pressed and fermented in French Burgundy barrels (15% new), then 9–12 months on the lees. Malolactic is stopped in a fifth of the wine to keep it fresh.
The Vineyards
Sustainably farmed partner vineyards: about 60% from 30-year-old vines on sandy slopes in Santa Maria, and 40% from the western Sta. Rita Hills.
The Producer
Qupé is one of California's original Rhône pioneers, built on cool-climate Syrah and Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. Now in the hands of Andrew Murray, it focuses on carefully chosen sites in the Central Coast's cool east–west valleys and a minimal-intervention approach. Founder Bob Lindquist received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
