Tasting Note
Green apple, lime and gooseberry with tropical notes, white flowers and a subtle mineral edge. Fresh, crisp, well balanced and playful.
Drink it with: asparagus, fish with hollandaise, or Thai food.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked, crushed and pressed straight away. The juice settles overnight before fermentation, then spends four months on fine lees before blending and bottling. No oak.
The Vineyards
Fruit from six growers across Elgin, Botrivier, Walker Bay and Villiersdorp, on decomposed sandstone and Bokkeveld shale over clay. Different aspects, clones and soils each add something to the blend.
The Producer
Andrew Gunn founded Iona at around 420 metres in the Elgin Valley, looking out over the Atlantic. The cool, long season (harvest can be two months after Stellenbosch) gives fresh, elegant wines, and the home vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with geese on pest patrol.
