Tasting Note
Chilean Riesling is one of the wine world's best-kept secrets, and this is a great way in. Pale green in the glass, with a nose full of lime and lemon and just a hint of blossom. Dry, light and properly refreshing, with a zesty, mineral streak running right through to the finish. The kind of white you open "for a glass" and find empty half an hour later.
Drink it with: a prawn cocktail, Goan fish curry or a creamy cod chowder.
The Winemaking
Fermented slowly and cool in stainless steel, over about 30 days, to hold on to all that aromatic Riesling character. No malolactic fermentation and no oak, so it stays crisp and pure.
The Vineyards
The fruit comes from the El Carmen vineyard in Yumbel, down in Chile's cool, wet Bío Bío region. Clay-loam soils on gentle south-east-facing slopes, very low yields and hand-picked grapes.
The Producer
Viña Indómita is based in Casablanca, between Santiago and the coast, with vineyards stretching from Casablanca to Maipo, Maule and Itata. They match each grape to the region that suits it best (cool-climate whites in the south and on the coast, Cabernet and Carménère in warmer Maipo) and take sustainability seriously, cutting water and energy use and employing locally.
