Tasting Note
Austria's favourite red grape, and a brilliant alternative to Pinot Noir or Beaujolais. Red cherry, plum and berries, medium-bodied with smooth, ripe tannins and a light peppery finish. Fresh, fruity and very easy to drink. Try it with a slight chill on a warm evening.
Drink it with: roast duck, pork belly or anything off the barbecue.
The Winemaking
Five days' cold soak, then a slow fermentation with twice-daily pump-overs and another five days on the skins. Malolactic runs alongside, and the wine spends around five months in big old oak casks (5,000–8,000 litres), with about 10% in older barriques. Made at an energy-neutral winery.
The Vineyards
South-facing vineyards in Lower Austria, with the canopy managed for airflow and healthy grapes. Picked in mid-October.
The Producer
Funkstille is a five-wine range made with a 16th-generation family producer in Niederösterreich, putting Austria's best-known grapes in bold modern bottles.
