Tasting Note
Top-flight Gigondas from one of the appellation's star estates. Young, it's fruit-driven with fine herby, garrigue notes; give it a few years and it moves into deeper, spicier territory. Built from all of the estate's Gigondas vineyards, it's a complete picture of the place, with four classic Rhône grapes in harmony.
Drink it with: barbecued steak, game or a slow-cooked lamb casserole.
The Winemaking
75% Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah and a dash of Cinsault. Partly destemmed, moved by gravity and fermented for 20–30 days in steel. Aged for 18 months in large 36-hectolitre Stockinger foudres and terracotta amphorae, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The Vineyards
Eight lieux-dits across Gigondas (hence the name) with 40-year-old vines on red and blue clays and limestone-rich marl. Certified organic (Ecocert) and biodynamic (Demeter), hand-picked and double-sorted.
The Producer
Yves Gras is one of the great figures of the Southern Rhône and a mentor to many younger growers. Since 2006 the style has become more approachable in youth without losing its sense of place, and his son Benjamin now leads the 23-hectare estate.
