Dom des Herbauge, Cotes de Grandlieu Muscadet Sur Lie La Roche Blanche

£17.00

Tasting Note

Muscadet with a bit more to say than most. Deep golden for the style, with minerality, honey and grapefruit on the nose and a full but charming body. Lemony on the palate with a light, crisp finish, and a faint natural spritz from being bottled straight off its lees. At 10.5%, it's the perfect aperitif.

Drink it with: oysters and any seafood, delicate salmon, an aged goat's cheese, or light Asian dishes.

The Winemaking

Fermented cool to keep the aromatics, then left on its lees for 8–14 months with regular stirring. That's the 'sur lie' bit, and it gives this wine its texture. Bottled straight from the lees. No oak.

The Vineyards

A 6-hectare plot of 45- to 70-year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines on rocky schist dotted with quartz and flint, in the Côtes de Grandlieu near Nantes. Farmed sustainably.

The Producer

Domaine des Herbauges makes what Julia Harding MW calls "elegant and balanced" Muscadet. Winemaker Jérôme combines that style with careful, sustainable vineyard work, and La Roche Blanche is the estate's old-vine showpiece.
