Château Treytins, Montagne St-Emilion

£27.00

Tasting Note

Right Bank Merlot with plenty of polish, at a satellite-appellation price. Ripe black cherry, blackberry and violets, opening up to cedar, graphite and baking spice. Medium to full-bodied, with plum and cassis at the core, a little cocoa, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Long, dark and spicy. Lovely now with a quick decant, and it will keep for 5–8 years.

Drink it with: red meat, roast poultry or a good cheeseboard.

The Winemaking

87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sorted on a vibrating table, fermented in temperature-controlled steel with a long maceration, then aged for 18 months, with a quarter of the wine in older French barrels.

The Vineyards

Just over 5 hectares of 25-year-old vines on sandy-loam to gravel soils, partly on a slope, in Montagne, the largest of Saint-Émilion's satellite appellations. Double Guyot pruning and careful yield control.

The Producer

Château Treytins is best known for its Lalande-de-Pomerol, but it has been making this Montagne Saint-Émilion since 1998.
