Chateau Penin, Bordeaux Superieur Rouge Tradition

£22.00

Tasting Note

Unoaked Bordeaux Supérieur that's all about the fruit and the gravel it grows on. Violets, dark berries, strawberry and spring flowers on the nose. Round, fleshy and medium-bodied, with a juicy core of fruit, fine powdery tannins and an easy, elegant finish. A Bordeaux you can drink with almost anything.

Drink it with: roast chicken, a mixed grill, grilled vegetables or a hearty summer salad.

The Winemaking

90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. A cold soak to draw out the aromas gently, then a slow, cool fermentation with 18 days on the skins. Aged for two years in concrete (no oak) and a further 12 months in bottle before release.

The Vineyards

A single gravelly, sandy plot of 20-year-old vines near the Dordogne, looking across to the Saint-Émilion hill. The estate farms on agro-forestry principles: native trees replanted around the plots, cover crops between the vines and pheromone traps instead of insecticides.

The Producer

Patrick, the fifth generation of his family, took over Château Penin in 1982, stopped selling grapes to others and put all 15 hectares into making his own wine, with quality as the priority.

The Details

  • Vintage: 2021
  • ABV: 13%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Region: Bordeaux Supérieur
  • Country: France
  • Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
