Tasting Note
Fine and elegant, with salty, chalky, wet-stone minerality, citrus, peach and apricot, and hints of herbs and aniseed. Silky, with lively acidity and stone fruit, lychee and citrus on a long finish.
Drink it with: pasta, rice dishes, white meats in light sauces, grilled fish, seafood or roasted vegetables.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked and double-sorted. Half ferments in small concrete tanks and clay amphorae, half in French and Austrian oak barrels and foudres, then nine months on the lees with regular stirring.
The Vineyards
Vines over 60 years old at about 545 metres on chalky, low-organic soils near Samaniego, Villabuena de Álava and Leza. Small, thick-skinned bunches give concentrated fruit.
The Producer
Bodegas Amaren is where Jon Cañas, grandson of Luis Cañas, makes a raw, modern take on Rioja Alavesa: native yeasts, concrete, amphora and long lees ageing, with place names rather than Crianza or Reserva on the label.
